yeeI am a comic book fan. My dad got me into this genre. I am happy to say that my daughters are comic book fans. It wasn’t something I pushed onto them. They started asking questions about certain heroes and villains. The more they asked the happier I got. The only issue that I found was that there wasn’t enough books and action figures for kids that centered around women super heroes.

Thankfully all that has changed. DC Comics recently started up a new series called DC SuperHero Girls. It takes place when the heroes we know and love are in high school. At Super Hero High, iconic Super Heroes like Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, Harley Quinn, Bumblebee, Poison Ivy, and Katana navigate all the twists and turns of high school. United by friendship, the DC Super Hero Girls empower kids to shine with confidence and courage, especially while they combat those overwhelming, exciting, and awesomely awkward moments of growing up.

DC Comics and Random House Books brought on the fantastic Lisa Yee to write the first of many novels in this series. The first book, Wonder Woman at Super Hero High follows Wonder Woman as she enters high school as an outsider and tries to fit in. Lisa does a brilliant job of taking the characters that we all know and putting a different spin on each character.

As I read this story to my daughters I loved the different nods Lisa gave to each character that we come across in the book. Yee does a brilliant job of lily readingwriting in things we know about each character, but balancing in things that a teenage version of each hero and villain would struggle with.

My daughters are eight and five years old. We would read a chapter a night before it was their bedtime. My eight year old couldn’t wait until the evening. After she was done with her homework she would take the book and read it by herself. As a parent you love to see your child embrace reading. Wonder Woman at Super Hero High was one of those books that she couldn’t put down.

I had the great pleasure of chatting with Lisa about the book and so much more. To listen to the interview click here.

To go along with the book series DC Comics and Mattel started up a new toy line. Mattel was kind enough to send some of the action figures for my daughters and me to review. Please note: I was given a review copy of the book and some of the toys, but my thoughts are my own.
