Someone once told me that when I get older I won’t want to play video games. Man, if they could see me now! Not only do I still play, but my wife and two daughters play right along with me. One of the reasons why I fell in love with gaming was because of the Nintendo Entertainment System or more typically called NES. I remember when my sister got the Super Mario Bros. /Duck Hunt NES system combo. We could play those games for hours. Being the little brother, I was always Luigi. I think that is why Luigi to this day is one of my favorite characters.

741Then the Super Nintendo Entertainment System came out and things just got a whole lot better. I was introduced to games like Donkey Kong Country, Mario Kart, and Kirby’s Dream Land 3. My friends and I couldn’t get over the graphics. Who needed an arcade when you had games like this right in the comfort of your own home? I remember saving my allowance for games that I couldn’t wait to play. At that time, I thought that this was the pinnacle of video gaming systems.

I was so wrong on that. A few years later, we were introduced to Nintendo 64! WOW! All of a sudden video games just got the ultimate power-up! A few games were staples in my house and then in my college apartment. My friends and I played Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, GoldenEye, and Mario Kart 64. When we should have been studying, we might have been playing on the N64. Kids, this is a do-as-I-say and not as-I-do moment! The good news is that even playing video games I still graduated college with honors. So it is all about time management. Have fun, but make sure you do your homework!

Then I got into the “real world”. This was when I was supposed to stop playing video games. That might have happened if it wasn’t for Nintendo’s Wii. This system was very interactive. It got my family, my friends, and I off the couch. We were running, jumping, and dancing to a variety of games. Nintendo was smart by making sure characters and games we all grew up with and love had updated titles. Games like Kirby’s Return to Dream Land and Mario Kart Wii are fantastic games. The gameplay on those titles was superb and the graphics were amazing. My wife and I would play many Wii games, including New Super Mario Bros Wii, when she was pregnant with our second daughter. As soon we put our first child to bed, we would head downstairs and play a few levels. We would laugh and play trying to avoid waking up the kiddo.

Now as father of two, the gaming doesn’t stop. We have upgraded to Wii U! We are still playing Mario Kart. I love that we are passing down the tradition of playing video games to them. We have such a great time playing together as a family. One of the characters in Super Smash Bros. that they wanted to learn more about was Kirby. My daughters thought he was cute and regularly played as him in the game.image2

So with their love for Kirby, I can’t wait to show them the new Kirby game that just launched for the Nintendo 3DS. It is called Kirby: Planet Robobot. This game takes our favorite hero, Kirby, to a whole new level, no pun intended. One of Nintendo’s iconic characters is back and puffier/better than ever. In Kirby: Planet Robobot, you can harness the power of a mysterious mech to stop ruthless invaders from mechanizing Kirby’s home world, Planet Popstar. You get to smash through tough obstacles, lift heavy objects with ease and scan enemies to shape-shift into new Modes, including a jet or a car, with powerful abilities in this supercharged action-platformer. It is the Kirby we all know and love with some new, cool upgrades.

You can even make Kirby inhale and swallow enemies to gain more than 20 different copy abilities, some new to the series like the Doctor, which lets Kirby throw pills and mix concoctions, and ESP, giving Kirby Psychic powers to use against enemies. Pretty sick, right? If you have friends who have a Nintendo 3DS, you can all join in on the fun. Besides the solo story mode missions, there is a mode called Team Kirby Clash, which is an RPG-styled mini-game where four players can all play at once to team up and take on tough boss battles.411

If you have the latest Nintendo systems, I am guessing that you have amiibo figures just like us in our household. You can use many of the amiibo figures in Kirby: Planet Robobot. All you need to do is tap into each amiibo. If you have the Link amiibo, you will be able to give Kirby the ability to use a sword. Both Sonic and Ryu amiibo figures grant random copy abilities. I love this feature in Kirby’s new game. Like I said before, Nintendo thinks of the player when it comes to developing games. They seem to almost read our minds when it comes to gameplay.

Kirby: Planet Robobot is another chapter in the long line of the fantastic games in the Kirby franchise. This is going to be one of the hottest games this year. Trust me from one gamer to another you and your family will really dig this game. Launching today, June 10, what better gift than to surprise yourself, your Dad or your kids for some upcoming Father’s Day fun, right? Dad loves his video games – hint hint…
