hairties yea and nea This post might set us dads back a few notches on the ol’ parenting ladder. If it does please forgive me. Some of you dads can relate, while others might chuckle at my incompetence in the area of styling my kids’ hair. As a stay at home dad I feel that I am comfortable at most of the things that come up throughout the day. Keyword here is most.

One of my biggest pitfalls is styling my daughters’ hair. I try….trust me I do. Heck I even practiced on my daughter’s Barbie “All Dolled Up Deluxe Stylin’ Head” doll. Practice doesn’t make perfect in this case.  My wife will sometimes giggle at my feeble attempts to style our kids’ hair. I despise that moment in the morning right after we are done brushing their teeth because it is hair time.

I thought at first that a pony tail would be easy to do. Nope! High pony, medium pony, or low pony I am the worst. As soon as I put a hair tie in to create a pony tail, I swear to you that the hair tie would just sag down to the point of almost falling off their head. I mean I just tied it as tight as I could and then BAM their hair just mocks me by not cooperating.pigtails

Don’t get me started on trying to braid their hair. After a few cracks at that my daughters would plead for me to stop trying. Once I hear the dreaded “Can I just wear a hand band?” I know that I am defeated. I think my daughters can smell my fear at that point. By that time their patience level with me has dropped off the map.

Recently I found a solution to my conundrum. I found that using two of the small plastic hair ties together helps me have some success. The cotton ones are my Achilles’ heel.  Those ones are the worst. So I am starting to make some progress.

Luckily there was a wacky hairstyle day at my daughter’s school. I made pigtails in my daughter’s hair. Since it was wacky hairstyle day the fact that those pigtails were askew made it perfect for once. Now all I have to do is try and convince her school that every day is wacky hairstyle day.
