growing_0004While celebrating Mother’s Day this year, I’m going to share some memories with my mom over the years.

Twirling her hair when I was just a baby. I’m not sure if this is a memory, or one my mom has told me about, but I always used to twirl my mom’s hair. I used to think that I made her hair wavy because I was twirling it so much.

Cutting Grapefruits. You may all not realize this, but my mom is the best grapefruit cutter in North America. She made cutting a grapefruit seem really simple, when in reality, it’s not. I’m gonna go have a grapefruit now.

Taking me to the grocery store, and having free samples. I always used to enjoy going to Shop Rite with my mom because that meant we would get some free samples. Bite size quesadillas and chicken nuggets? Yes please!

Flushing towels down the toilet. When we moved into a new house, my mom asked me to bring the towels to the bathroom. I associated toilet with bathroom. So I took the towels and started flushing them all down the toilet.

Making Hamburger Helper on camping trips. Camping with the family were some of my favorite memories. Whether we were in a tent, trailer, or motorhome, we had a blast. And I always looked forward to the nights my mom made Hamburger Helper.

Listening in when my mom had long talks with my sisters. I could never figure out what girls could talk about for hours. So I would just listen in from the other room. I couldn’t hear much, because they spoke quietly, but I think they were talking about feminine products or something.

Watching Sunday night movies while in high school. Every Sunday night my mom and I would sit and watch the latest docudrama on TV. Whichever “based on a true story” movie we were watching, you could guarantee that my mom and I would enjoy it while eating ice cream.

Watching her cry when I moved away to college. I was excited to go to college, but I knew I would miss my parents. Seeing my mom crying when she said goodbye got to me though. I saw how much she loved me, and that made me cry too.

0602Lunch with me when at college. Once we got over our tears, my mom would come to visit and we’d go out to lunch at Applebees or TGI Friday’s. Growing up in a house with three sisters, it wasn’t often that I got one-on-one time with my mom.

Going to the engagement ring store with me. I eventually found the girl I wanted to marry, and I wanted my mom there to help me pick out some oval cut engagement rings. I wouldn’t have had it any other way, mom, thanks for the help. We decided to go for unique Sydney custom engagement rings.

Dancing at my wedding. After I danced with my gorgeous wife on our wedding day, I danced with my beautiful mom. I just remember her saying, “I love you, I love you, I love you, Tommy.” Well mom, I love you too!

Hugging me when my daughter was sick. My daughter Babs went through heart surgery right after birth. There’s nothing scarier than that, and I really needed a hug from my parents then. They came through, as always.

You see, mom, you’ve always been there for me, and I thank you. Happy Mother’s Day! You mean the world to us!
