INTRODUCING YOU TO BANDS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW, BUT TOTALLY SHOULD.

Stiffed

I’m continually impressed with Santi White, who is best known as singer/ producer Santigold (I actually can’t believe I haven’t written more about her, save a mention in my Amanda Blank feature). Performing as Santigold, her music seamlessly blends elements of New Wave, 80’s pop, reggae, 70’s punk and subdued, measured funk. So one day when I was listening to random mixes on Spotify, I was surprised to hear someone sounding just like her doing straight up punk. And that’s how I was introduced to her earlier work as frontwoman to the band Stiffed.
Stiffed was a Philadelphia based punk/ ska band in the early 2000’s. Other members of the band are Matt Schleck bassist Chris Shar (who went on to join Man Man, written about here) and multi-instrumentalist Chuck Treece who was awarded a Pew Fellowship of the Arts. They only released two albums and then sadly disbanded. Maybe not sadly?? If they hadn’t we might not have seen some of White’s best music. I guess it’s just another step on her way from music executive, to songwriter, to producer to performer. This band just happens to be an early highlight of a stellar and artistically beautiful career.
