Haunted-House-PicWhen you move into a new home there are different sounds that you have to get used to. The sounds of the home settling are different from your last home. The furnace noise may have a different type of hum. As an adult you are aware of this issue. For your kids though those new noises can be a bit freaky. You might have to make a few more trips to their room at night to explain all the new sounds. That is part of being a parent.

My family and I moved into a new home last month. For the most part we are past all of the new noises. Yet there was one noise that started to freak me out. My wife was at work. My kids were at school. I was doing my normal work at home. I was editing one the Life of Dad podcasts when I first heard it. It sounded like a kid talking. The voice was a bit muffled. I couldn’t exactly tell what it was saying or where it was coming from. I heard it again. I left my office to investigate, but I didn’t hear the voice again.

I went back to work in my office. An hour went by and it was about time to leave the house to pick up my kids from school. I was making my way downstairs when I heard that creepy voice again. I still couldn’t understand what it was saying. I ran back to the location of where I thought I heard the noise. It sounded like it was coming from my daughter’s room. I looked at all the usual suspects, but nothing was making a noise.

I couldn’t waste any more time. I left my daughter’s room to go pick up my kids. With the normal hustle and bustle of the afternoon I completely forgot about that strange noise. That was until the next day. My family was at school and work. I was home alone again doing work. This time I was working on an article and had no music or the voice of people from a podcast to fill up my room with sound. It was eerily silent. It was a type of silence a parent could appreciate until I heard that voice again.

I flew out of my chair and ran into one of my daughter’s rooms. Nothing! I left her room a bit confused and a bit nervous. I was waiting for a kid to pop out of the wall or a TV like in the film The Ring. I was walking back into my office when I heard a voice clear as day say, “A tiara is a pup’s best friend.”

I went into my other daughter’s room and saw the culprit. It was my child’s remote control Pumpkin from Disney Princess Palace Pets. Apparently if you keep the ON/OFF button on the ON side that pup will say things randomly. This was a good life lesson for me. Now I will make sure that I read all of the instructions when my child gets an interactive toy. If I knew about that pup’s propensity to randomly talk I might not have thought our new house was haunted. Thankfully for my family and me it was just a toy. pup
