Being a parent means always being ready for a new surprise. Sometimes those surprises are found in your baby’s diaper but other times they comes when your child mows the lawn or tells you how much they love you at bedtime. We recently asked our Life of Dad community what their kid(s) did recently that surprised them and we loved the answers! Here are some of the best:

Keith Biro: My daughter’s fourth birthday is next Tuesday. When I asked her what she wanted she replied, “All I want is a card that says ‘Happy Birthday. I love you Kassi. Love, Daddy.'”

Got me right in the feels.

Keith Robbins: My daughter turns 3 on Saturday… At bedtime last night, I said “Sweet dreams, I love you” like I do every night… Well she responded with, “I love you MORE, Daddy!” Something that my wife and I have been saying to each other since before she was born, but never really to her as it was an inside joke between us… It’s amazing how personality and perception builds over time. She’s becoming our little combined clone, and I love every second of it.

Derek Constable: We have 2 boys. Ages 9 and almost 11 months. My 9 year old push mowed the front yard (by himself but mom was watching him) and weedeated the entire yard while I was gone with work last week.

The best week ever award goes to MzNeisha Lovingmii Twochristian: My daughter (11mos) used the potty consistently for 2 days straight (no accidents) & my son (5 yrs) ate all of his vegetables and even asked for seconds!

James Brookes: My 18 month old son recently hit me over the face with his toy bus when I fell asleep on the sofa after a long day at work…. I think he was worried and panicked so he decided to wake me up. The only thing I could do was wipe away the blood and laugh.

Leanne Martin: I told our 4.5-year old he was going to be a great big brother (I’m due in October with a second boy) and he looked up at me and said “you know what? I think you’re going to be a great mum.”

Amy Marken: My 7 and 3 year old decided to put sriracha (hot sauce) on the slide and slide down naked.
I’ve learned that 7 year olds aren’t mature enough to play on the slide without supervision.
I’ve also learned that she’s not the brightest crayon in the box. LOL

Pj Zoccolillo: The Boy (7) found, picked up, and carried a DEAD chipmunk to my wife… and asked if we could keep it. The Wife was… NOT pleased!

William Murphy: [My song] got Spotify and started showing me off that he likes the music I listen to.

Ben Larson’s son gives us hope for the future: After fishing the other day I brought my son’s to this local look out. I let my older son bentley out of the car. (He’s 3) while I got his brother Jamison out of the car. He came walking around to the side I was getting his brother out of where there was a pile of fast food garbage someone threw out there. He said look dad a big mess. We gotta clean it up . It made me love him more and hate society more all in the same punch.
