We all love our children’s milestones.  It can be their first laugh, crawl, or tooth….you name it we soak those moments all in and will remember each one forever. One that will always stand out for me is when my child takes her first step. We wait in anticipation when they stand up on their wobbly legs that make them sway back and forth.  You think to yourself, “OK this is it…this is where she will walk.” Then all of a sudden BOOM! Your child falls back on the ground and you have to wait once again until she takes her first step.

It usually happens when you don’t have your camera or phone so you can’t record it. Still that moment will stay ingrained in my mind. Once they start walking they go everywhere. My youngest is now learning how to master the skill of walking. She still from time to time looks like she had a few shots of Jager while walking from point A to point B in a roundabout direction. Still it is great that she can walk on her own. She is still learning to know her surroundings when she is walking. She sometimes will not look to where she is going and walk into a wall, chair, or person.

When she does knock into something I will say to her that she needs to watch where she is going. I’ll say to her, “Jordy, pay attention to where you are going sweetie.” She looks up at me and smiles as if to say, “Sure dad, whatever.” With this in mind we should always practice what we preach. In a perfect world we do, but we don’t live in a perfect world.

So this week I felt like a hypocrite. I was watching a movie with my girls before their nap. I hear the phone ring from downstairs. I went to go answer the phone and try to avoid all the toys that were on the floor. I did a great job of not walking on the toys, but I did manage to walk right into the door frame. I felt some pain, but thought I would be fine. I took my next step and I knew something was up. I walked down the stairs very gingerly and of course missed the phone call. I took off my sock and my left pinky toe was in the opposite direction of the rest of my toes.

I sent my wife a text message with a picture of my foot with the message saying, “I think I broke my toe.” She calls me with a bit of laughter in her voice. She asked me what happened and I told her. She wanted to know if she should come home. I said no and that I will be fine. She came home later that day from work and I took myself to the hospital. The doc said that I broke my toe. YEA….this is my first broken bone. I feel like an idiot when people ask what happened to my foot and I say I walked into a door frame. So now I have a bum toe and I love when the doctor told me to make sure I keep off my foot.  Like that will happen with two kids. Thank God for nap time. It gives me a chance to put my foot up and relax.  Did I mention I feel like an idiot yet?

I bet Jordan saw me walk into the door and think to herself, “Daddy should have been watching where he was going.” Plus I added my X-Ray to show that this is a true story.
