DAD DRUNK (The other D.D.)
Dad Drunk is a term I came up with recently. Having had multiple friends who have kids now, I noticed a phenomenon. When the dad’s had a night off from work, wife and kid, they got hammered!
I don’t think it’s intentional at all. I think our brains as dads tell us, “Hey you have a night off from responsibility and common decency, GO CRAZY!” . . . . . . . .
And we reply “Don’t mind if I do!”
This past Christmas a fellow Life of Dad contributor, Daniel Kunka, had a party. I had been a dad for about a month at this point. I remember telling myself, when the night started to be reasonable, responsible and not GO CRAZY. “You’re a dad now Ara, you must behave accordingly.” But alas the Dad Drunk bug bit me that night. Knowing that I had a Designated Driver and a place to crash, I went all out and got Dad Drunk, let go of some steam and had a good time.
According to Ara: It’s OK to be Dad Drunk, be responsible in your actions as usual and have a good time. Being a dad, doesn’t mean giving up your social life altogether and going into seclusion. And don’t forget to thank all that helped you have that good time. Your wife, or whoever watched your kid, your DD, and of course the host of the shindig. Thanks Kunka, thanks a lot.
