The streets of London are buzzing again! With the glow of Christmas and the new year behind us, the pace of life of dads has picked up again.
Parents are back at work, kids at school and the stores have already started selling greetings cards for Valentine’s Day!!
Business as usual…
Did you set any new years resolutions this year?
I don’t know about you, but I don’t get too excited about new years resolutions. It is great to have some stretch targets for the year though because us dads need to keep on top of our game. The thing is dads wear a lot of different hats in the houshold and he is expected to perform well in all roles.
How did you score well in all your dad roles last year?
My rating was going really well all round until I broke my arm in September, so I’m going to have to be more careful this year when I go cycle riding from now on.
Going back to dad’s targets for 2013- the question is how do you set goals for dad roles like your children’s taxi service, garden maintenance, DIY, putting out the rubbish bin (trash can) and being the family comedian? Not very easily. But, I’m sure as long as we show up on time, every time, we’ll do okay in these areas.
There is however one goal that I have set for our whole family this year and that is to keep a “family blessing” journal. The aim of the journal is for us to capture all the magical experiences that happen throughout the year for any member of the family. From little Nate, his sisters, mum and all the way up to big old dad. Just capturing those moments that happen and we tend forget about just a few weeks later.
Just imagine for a moment, you get to December 25th and you read a note written by your children that said something like “I rode my bike for the first time today” or maybe “I slept in my own room all night for the first time today” or even “my daddy is the bestest daddy in the world!”
These memories will be priceless.
My challenge to the life of dad community is to join me. If your up for it, go out this weekend , buy a journal and start a “family blessings” journal in your own family for 2013. Even if you didn’t hit all of your other goals this year, if you followed through on this one, it would be a very special gift to all your family next Christmas.
Here’s to an amazing year to all of the Life of dad community and their families.
One love.
Donovan
