I know that whenever I think of Irish Punk Rock, I envision Sushi, Tokyo and internally discern the beautiful language of Japan. Think of all the bands that would fit into this incredibly broad category. About…… one, single band is doing this as far as I know. You might not expect that punk rockers using tin whistles, banjo and mandolin with Irish sea shanty bravado would work with almost entirely Japanese lyrics. Everyday bands that fall in this category typically hail from the likes of Dublin, N.Y.C. or Boston. It’s surprising that the Cherry Coke$ can stand shoulder to shoulder with the leaders in this space like Flogging Molly, The Pogues and Dropkick Murphys. But they do and some of their better songs not only rival them, but at times can surpass. Cultural appropriation is a magical thing when done right.
