Alexi Lalas

Alexi Lalas has a passion for soccer. You saw it in playing days and now as an analyst for FOX Sports for the game he loves so much. Lalas played mostly as a defender and became one of the most famous soccer players in the United States after he played in the 1994 FIFA World Cup. He became the first modern-era American soccer player to play in the Italian Series.  Lalas served as the president and general manager of the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer until August of 2008. He was elected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2006. Alexi spoke with me about fatherhood and what he enjoys about being a dad.

Cobi Jones and his son.

Cobi Jones

The United States’ all-time leader in caps, Cobi Jones appeared in 164 games for the US National Team between 1992-2004. He is one of the most reliable offensive players the US ever had, not to mention versatile, as Jones could play as a forward and on both sides of the midfield.  He was a fixture for the Los Angeles Galaxy from the founding of Major League Soccer in 1996 through its first 12 seasons, and is their all-time leading scorer.

Jones retired as a player at the end of the 2007 MLS season, and almost immediately took the position of assistant coach to LA’s new team boss Ruud Gullit.  He stayed on with the Galaxy as the interim head coach when Gullit left, and served as an assistant when former US National Team coach Bruce Arena was hired.  In January 2011, the New York Cosmos announced Jones as their Associate Director of Soccer. That same year, Jones was elected to The National Soccer Hall of Fame.

Jeff and his family

Jeff Attinella

Growing up, Jeff was all about sports– football, soccer, baseball, you name it. If it wasn’t sports related, he wasn’t interested. His love for sports is a passion that has shaped his entire life. He is fortunate to play soccer for a living, but it’s bigger than that. His most cherished childhood memories are centered around watching a big game; his relationship with his wife sparked by a mutual love for Penn State football, and his passion for Tampa Bay sports keeps him close to home, even though he has moved all over the country.

He owes so much of his life to sports. The idea to tell these stories came about after the birth of his daughter, Remy. Jeff wanted to create a vehicle where he could share his love of sports with her, in a way that would hopefully build a bond they would share forever. Reading together provides a way for parents and their children to share in special moments, but he wants these stories to do even more. He wants to reach the kids like himself, the ones more likely to grab a ball than a book. It is so important for a growing mind to fall in love with reading and he hopes these stories can bridge a love for sports with a newfound passion for reading.
