On each of the 30 days leading up to Father’s Day, Life of Dad will feature a different great dad from around the world.
Today we feature a husband, father, and author, Matthew Salesses. Matt is the dad to an 11 month old girl, as well as author of multiple books including ‘The Last Repatriate‘ and “Our Island of Epidemics.” Matt is also the fiction editor at the excellent website, Good Men Project. Here is Matt’s interview….
I really became a father when… they told me I couldn’t videotape the birth and I agreed not to.
My kids makes me laugh when… she laughs.
Favorite daddy cocktail once the kids crash? My baby goes to sleep at midnight, so I barely have time to do the dishes and wash her bottles and give my wife a massage before crashing, myself.
Dream date night with your lady, where would you go? Oh, if only!
What is the hardest thing about fatherhood? Fear of failing your child. Finding time for your relationship. Doing your best always–I never realized how often I needed time to not do my best, to try less, to regroup. Now that time is gone.
What’s in your man cave? Nonexistent.
How many hours of sleep each night? Seven? Usually interspersed with being kicked in the face by the baby and woken up in the middle of the night. Oh, wait, do you mean the baby? She sleeps a lot better.
What food that your daughter eats do you like the most? Watermelon.
How has fatherhood changed in the last 20 years? Better for the child, harder for the father.
Dream family vacation? How long until she goes to Harvard?
Make sure to check out Matt’s website, and take a look at his book, ‘The Last Repatriate’ for sale at Amazon. Finally, read one of Matt’s great columns at Good Men Project, entitled ‘Love Recorded.‘
