So, when I set out on the wonderful journey called blogging, I had grand plans of posting at least once a month.  Well, I officially took a dump on that notion considering it’s been four months between my first and second post.  Then again, if there is one thing parenthood can teach you, it’s that you can throw plans out the window and always expect the unexpected.  I was drafting my second post in my head, but then came holidays, new job, broken nose (courtesy of my dog), subsequent surgery for the broken nose (more on this later), vacation, etc.  All in all, it has been a crazy start to 2012.

Anyway, for this post, I plan to go through all the “firsts”, good and bad, that I’ve experienced since my daughter was born.  As a new parent, you constantly look forward to these events that you will keep as memories to be shared with your kids as they get older.  So, in as much order as my scatter brain can remember, here we go:

 First Smile

Wow, this is when you start to realize that your baby is noticing things.  It’s a pretty cool event.  I cannot pinpoint exactly when Josie’s first smile was, but I can tell you, five months later, my eyes still light up when I see her smile.  All of the sudden I have this urge to start belting out some Bad English.  Although I think my singing voice is spectacular, as a courtesy to those outside my office, I’ll refrain…

 First Giggle

This goes along with the smile, but you have to wait a little longer for it.  I remember this one vividly.  Nicole (holding Josie) and I were standing in the kitchen while I was getting ready for work, and all of the sudden, we heard the first audible laughter.  It completely stopped us in our tracks.  She yells, “Get the camera!”  Yeah right, she’s not quite trained to laugh on command, but like idiots we sit there with the camera pointing at her for probably 5 minutes…

First Time You Get Pooped On

Yeah, no parenting class is going to train you for this.  This was one random day when my dad was over the house.  I remember hearing the BM and waiting a minute or two and thinking, I don’t want her to have to sit in this for long.  So, I start to take her over to the changing table, and my dad warns me to maybe wait a little longer.  Now, those of you who don’t know my ol’ man, I wouldn’t exactly characterize him as Mr. Mom if you know what I mean.  So, I don’t listen…Big mistake.  I pull off the diaper, and almost immediately get a handful of poop.  My dad laughs…

 First Rollover

This is when you start to cringe because you realize your baby is almost on the move…yikes.  I would say I remember the first time that Josie rolled over, but neither Nicole nor I saw it.  That sneaky little girl is probably throwing parties behind our back!  This went like so…Me: “Nicole, did you put her on her stomach??”  Nicole: “Nope!”  And we have our first back to front rollover.  Not as exciting as actually seeing it, which of course happened later, but there you go…

 First Surgery for Daddy

Figured I would throw this one in there for my dog, Cash.  Most mornings before work, I take Cashy Boy down to the fields to throw his B-A-L-L around.  I guess its habit to spell out the word, because he goes bananas even if you just say the word.  Anyway, one morning he drops the ball at my feet, and I bend over to pick it up…BANG!  He snapped his head up to start running and cracked me right on my nose.  Instant crime scene.  I walk him home with blood all over myself while neighbors are passing me heading to work.  Real nice.  I get home, clean myself up, and ask Nicole to grab me a band-aid to cover the gash on the outside of my nose.  I’m ready just to head to work, and she suggests I should go to the ER.  I’m thinking…why??  She informs me that my nose looks crocked.  Sweet.  A bunch of doctor appointments, a surgery and follow-ups later…back to normal…

 First Vacation

We embarked on our first vacation with Josie in February of this year when we headed up to Smuggler’s Notch, VT with some of my family.  I my mind, this trip could have gone either way.  Luckily, Josie was an absolute trooper.  Eight hour car ride, and she barely made a peep the whole time.  She did awesome sleeping in the Pack ‘n Play in a strange place, and having her schedule thrown off.  Just when we thought we were in the clear, another first came…

Our First Vacation

First Sickness

This sucks.  While we were on our vacation, my brother’s 1 year old came down with a stomach bug.  Poor girl.  Next thing you know, it was spreading like a wildfire.  Luckily, it didn’t hit most of us until we got home from vacation.  This includes poor Josie.  We had literally just gotten home.  She wasn’t even out of her car seat yet.  I reach down to pick her up, and out comes a waterfall of puke.  By the way, whoever says that it’s not as bad when it’s your own child is full of shit.  Puke is puke…

Here’s to more firsts to come!
