Here is another installment of comics you should be checking out with your kids and also when you have some you time! There is a graphic novel from DC Comics in the DC Super Hero Girls series that is perfect for Valentine’s Day. So let’s take a look at the books you need to check out this month.

For Parents and Kids:

DC Super Hero Girls: Date with Disaster!

My daughters and I read this book over the weekend. We really enjoyed the story and the artwork. My nine year really loved seeing Catwoman in the book. When I asked my seven year old what her favorite part of the story she said, “I liked the whole thing.” I could not disagree with her! This is a fun family read.

From the highly successful multimedia pop culture property comes DC Super Hero Girls: Date with Disaster!, starring one of its most popular characters, Batgirl. Catwoman is out alone on the prowl one night when KABOOM—an explosion at S.T.A.R. Labs rouses the other girls from their slumber. Star students Batgirl and Lois Lane both know the lab incident is fishy, and they meet later to share clues. But nothing could’ve prepared Batgirl for what they see next—Batgirl’s dad on a date!

Batgirl is grossed out until her friends convince her Dads get lonely, too. And with the school dance coming up and everyone pairing off—heck, even Principal Waller has a date with a guy named Deadshot—maybe it’ll be okay just this once. The girls place a personal ad for Commissioner Gordon while they delve deeper into the mystery surrounding the explosion, but they’re about to discover more than who is behind the attack on S.T.A.R. Labs. Could it be that posting an ad looking for dates for the commissioner is like advertising catnip for criminals?

This issue continues to develop the relationships that we have seen in past issues from this DC Super Hero Girls series. The book is fantastically written by Shea Fontana, this Batgirl-centric story is perfect for kids ages 6-12.

New series from DC Comics:

Recently DC Comics released some very cool news about some upcoming series. DC Entertainment revealed two new original graphic novel publishing imprints, DC Ink focused on young adult readers, and DC Zoom focused on middle grade readers. Both imprints will feature a world class line-up of authors who have established in both age fan bases. These authors will bring their storytelling expertise to a DC Universe filled with iconic characters like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and many more. The first titles from DC Ink and DC Zoom will be released in Fall 2018.

“Superheroes are more popular than ever so it only makes sense to bring these DC characters to an entirely new generation of young readers,” stated Diane Nelson, president of DC Entertainment and president of Warner Bros. Consumer Products. “The first comic books created decades ago were for kids, and as the business evolved and matured, it became more focused on adult readers. DC Ink and DC Zoom present an exciting new opportunity to grow our publishing business and ensure beloved stories built around iconic characters like Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are endeared as part of the fabric of childhood for years to come.”

“Two of the recent areas of growth in publishing include graphic novels and books for young readers – we’re bringing those formats together with DC Ink and DC Zoom,” said DC Entertainment Publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee. “We’ve already experienced tremendous success with our DC Super Hero Girls graphic novels. The new DC Ink and DC Zoom slate, paired with a stellar author line-up, presents a major business growth opportunity and we couldn’t be more excited – we’re going big.”

For Dads only:

Bane: Conquest #8

Since Bane broke Batman’s back in the comic book series Knightfall I have been intrigued by Bane. DC Comicsrecently launched a new series about Bane. In this issue we see him trying to abduct the infant Naja-Naja, Bane has made an enemy of Kobra. And the cult won’t stop until he’s dead. A global manhunt for the Man Who Broke the Bat begins but he’s not one to run or hide. With his trusted comrades Bird, Trogg and Zombie he plots a strategy to take the fight to the underworld empire run by Valentina. Bane’s original creators continue their epic tale of mayhem, revenge…and conquest!

Speaking of comic book heroes you should check out my recent interview HERE with actor, Cress Williams who stars as Black Lightning on the CW series, Black Lightning.
