A couple of years ago I started writing letters to my kids to ensure they know my thoughts, beliefs and advice on life. It’s pretty simple. Most mornings before I hit the gym I take 10 minutes on my iPad to listen to the mass readings of the day. If something in the scripture strikes a chord with me then I take another 10 minutes to whip out a letter to my kids. Last year for Christmas, I gave them a book with the first 40 letters.

Since this is a community of guys trying to be better Dads, I figured I would share the letters with all of you. Hopefully it will inspire you to continue to teach your kids everything you have learned in life.

Letter #1

Dear Kids,
As you go through life you will want many things. You will desire to drive a nice car, live in a great house and own the best wardrobe. Growing up in Ladera Ranch you will be surrounded by expensive cars, big homes and trendy clothes.

This is all ok. All ok if you realize that none of it matters. The relationships you have matter. Helping others matters. Your family matters. Loving God matters.

There has never been a funeral procession with a U-Haul attached to the back of a hearse filled with all the things that the person loved. However, there are always loved ones behind the hearse to honor the life and legacy of those who pass away. That matters.
One day we will go to heaven. We should aspire to face God with pride to hear him say “well done faithful servant”. That matters.

Love Dad.
