For Philadelphia Phillies infielder, Freddy Galvis Monday, July 3rd will be a day long remembered. Freddy witnessed the birth of his second daughter in the early morning and then went to work later that evening and hit a two run home run in the first inning. Even though it was a long day for the Galvis Family, Freddy will look back on this day with so much joy and happiness.

I got to chat with Freddy about that momentous day, baseball and fatherhood. Freddy and his wife, Ana have two daughters. Galvis loves to go to the beach with his family, watch soccer and play basketball when he is not playing for the Phillies.

Art Eddy: You had one Monday earlier this month that was a long day for you, but I am guessing it is one of your most memorable days. You and your wife welcomed your second daughter into this world early in the morning and then later on Galvis belted a two-run home run to give the Phillies a first-inning lead. When you look back on that day what will you remember the most about that day?

Freddy Galvis: Just to see my second daughter for the first time. Like you said it was an unbelievable day. It was a crazy day. A long day, but it was a beautiful day. Just to see my baby for the first time and then go to the field and on the first pitch hit a homer. It was unbelievable. It is something to remember for all of my life.

AE: While you were preparing for the game how tough was it to focus on the game on the day that your daughter was born?

FG: Yeah, it was hard. I spoke with my wife again. I sent her a text to see if everything was going to be okay about a half hour before the game. She told me everything was good. I said to myself alright it is time to go.

AE: Now do you have to hit another home run and dedicate it to your older daughter?

FG: (Laughs.) I guess so man. The next one I hit will be for my older daughter.

AE: What popped into your mind when you found out that you were going to be a father for the first time?

FG: Wow. It was one of the best moments in my life. I remember that I came back from a road trip. My wife was waiting for me in the hotel. As soon as I get to the room she had the test in her hand. She told me that we were going to have a baby. For a moment I froze. Then it was amazing. To have the opportunity to be a dad was really good. It was really amazing.

AE: How do you balance work and family? Is it a lot of FaceTime when you are on the road?

FG: Yeah, it is a lot of FaceTime. I always talk with my wife. We are always texting. I always have been asking about my daughter. When I have time we do FaceTime. I think communication is really important.

AE: What are some of the core values you look to instill into your kids as they grow up?

FG: Family first. I think that is one of the biggest things. Always be a nice person. For me I believe that you can be good with everybody. You should show love to everybody. Be a good person. My mom and my dad always used to teach me that. Try to be a good person and respect everybody. I now try to pass that onto my babies.

AE: What is the one biggest piece of advice you have for new dads?

FG: To show love to your babies. You have to show it. You have to show it every single day when you have the opportunity. I think that is the biggest thing.

Life of Dad Quick Five

AE: Do you guys have a favorite family movie that you all love to watch together?

FG: We have been watching a lot. I would say Moana.

AE: Do you guys have a favorite song that you all like to sing to or dance to as a family?

FG: It is a Spanish song. I don’t know if they have a name in English. We use it before they go to bed.

AE: Describe the perfect family vacation.

FG: It would be a place with a pool for the kids. Just a place to be together. It doesn’t have to be a perfect place, but just to be together and have a good time.

AE: The first thing you were thinking when you stepped into the batter’s box in your first Major League Baseball game was…

FG: It was a dream come true.

AE: Favorite sport other than baseball is….

FG: Soccer. I really love soccer.
