Only a few days left! The Beer Guy will be sending his favorite 6-pack of beer to the 100th Twitter follower (@TheBeerGuyLOD), if achieved by April 19th.
Greetings Life of Dad Community!
I’m starting to get that feeling of spring and summer. Warmer weather and less rain means spending more time outside. What does that mean? Beer festivals, of course! I tweeted (@TheBeerGuyLOD) last week about finding one of the most complete beer festival calendars around. Check out the Beer Festival Calendar for the festivals, beer weeks or expos coming to your neck of the woods this year. I personally find these events a great opportunity to try different beers you normally wouldn’t find in your local grocery store or brewpub, and enjoy them with like-minded beer lovers. In addition to great beer, you can typically find great food and music too. What more could you ask for?
In other news, I recently had a reader ask about a statistic I shared in Beer Review #1 (Widmer Spiced IPA), namely, the fact that beer was the third most popular drink on Planet Earth behind water and tea. The question was raised regarding how much beer is sold, domestically in the US, and who was selling it. Thanks to The Beer Institute, the beer industry lobbying organization, we have that answer (see below).
Beer Guy,
This is awesome. I’m going to look up each beer before I buy, from now on. Did you really drink it (Discord Dark IPA) at room temperature first? Is that common for tasting beer? – Tommy (via Life of Dad comment)
Tommy – First of all, thanks for providing me with the medium to share The Beer Guy blog with everyone. You’re the man! Think about this: Beer was introduced around 9500 BC, and mechanical refrigeration was invented three centuries ago. Now unless the Eskimo or Nordic communities were big into making beer (they weren’t), beer has been enjoyed warm for most of its existence. Read more here. But let’s not get confused with warm (or even hot) beer with beer served at room temperature. Yes, I enjoyed the Discord IPA at room temperature. What do they say, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, right? Well, so can the beauty of beer. If you like it warm, drink it warm. If you like it cold, drink it cold. Everyone has their own unique tastes, as well as affinity to the temperature beer should be served. Enjoy it any which way you like. TBG
Beer Guy – Did I see that you’re giving out your favorite 6-pack to your 100th Twitter follower? What if I’m not on Twitter. Can I still get free beer? – Jim (San Diego, CA)
Jim – Yes, you saw correct. The deadline is April 19th. Not on Twitter? Either get on Twitter or get one of your friends to be the 100th follower and enjoy the free beer I’ll send him/her. TBG
Beer Guy – Your review of the Pyramid Discord Dark IPA indicated that your analysis was based off of a glass poured at room temperature, and a glass poured after it had been refrigerated. Can taste be affected by simply drinking beer out of the bottle, as opposed to out of the glass? – Bradley (Dallas, TX)
Bradley – This is an excellent point. While some advocate for always pouring & drinking beer out of a glass, I don’t mind having it out of the bottle as well. And you know what? As good as the Discord IPA was in the glass (both warm & cold), my third tasting a few days later was out of the fridge, and out of the bottle. As it turns out, I thought it was at its best this way. Shame on me because I think I got more of those hoppy notes I was looking for from a glass pour by drinking it out of the bottle. I stand by the 5 out of 7 rating, though. Great question, Bradley. TBG
Thanks for all the interest, e-mail and Tweets! Keep them coming and keep an eye out for The Beer Guy’s weekly beer review, this Thursday.
