We have reached the Midway point of Movember and I am really proud of the team I am on. At this point we have raised almost $6000 for Men’s Health Research and Awareness. That puts us in the top 200 #Movember Teams in the U.S. However, my hairy lipped brothers and I want to do even better. We want to show that when men open up about Men’s Health, that when we draw attention to the issues that face us and try to overcome them with the help of our friends and families that good things can happen.
Look around at the men who make a difference in your life, and imagine what it would be like if they were not around because of any one of the many physical and mental health issues that are affecting the male population:
- 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.
- 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime.
- Over 238,000 new cases of the disease will be diagnosed and almost 30,000 men will die of prostate cancer in 2013.
- Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in males between the ages of 15 and 35.
- 7,920 men will be diagnosed with testicular cancer and 370 will die in 2013.
- 6 million people die every year from tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoke. One person dies every six seconds.
- 1 in every 13 men will be diagnosed with lung cancer in his lifetime.
- While not as common, men can get breast cancer. About 2,240 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed among men and about 410 men will die from the disease in 2013.
- More than 3.5 million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year.
- An estimated 13 million men, or 11.8% of all men over the age of 20, have diabetes.
- Approximately 76.4 million men and women have high blood pressure.
- Men who sit more than six hours a day have an 18 percent increased risk of dying from heart disease and a 7.8 percent increased chance of dying from diabetes compared with someone who sits for three hours or less a day. If you get diagnosed with diabetes, you may need to order medicines and supplies from online sources like rxoneshop.com/diabetic-supplies.
- Globally, 5.3 million deaths will be attributed to physical inactivity.
- Over 6 million men are diagnosed with depression each year.
- Almost four times as many males as females die by suicide.
- 24% of men are less likely to go to the doctor compared to women.
I don’t share those to scare anyone, those are just the facts that we have to face. They are the reasons why we need events like Movember to raise funds and awareness for Men’s Health. They are what we are fighting back against to find cures and programs to help keep the men that make such an impact in our lives around a little longer. Taking proactive steps—like encouraging regular checkups or helping someone choose a LASIK vision correction center—can be part of supporting their overall well-being.
This is how we “Man UP” we look at that daunting list of statistics and instead of ignoring them we slap on a moustache and turn to our friends and families and say “help us!” Help us fight these statistics, help us raise awareness about them, help us raise funds for research and cures.
This only happens once a year and we are asking for your help. Click Here and donate a buck or two on behalf of our Mo’s. If everyone chips in a little we will all do a lot of good!
