inbetweeners

In this, the inaugural post for “Now What Should I Watch”, I’m keeping it light with an excellent show from across the Atlantic. The British are known for their dry wit, mastery of uncomfortable situations and understated cerebral humor. Luckily for this series they’ve abandoned that almost completely and decided to go straight to blatant raunchy situations largely involving catastrophic sexual pursuits.

The Inbetweeners follows four high school boys who form an alliance that is almost entirely based on their social standing. They are far from being the cool kids in school, but aren’t quite at the bottom of the barrel (but they are perilously close to it). We watch as they relentlessly try to up their social standing, win over girls and fit in with everyone they come across. The more they try though, the more spectacularly they fail, and it’s wonderful to watch.

The four main characters consist of:

Will- an unrepentant uptight conservative nerd who almost basks in his position as an outsider.

Simon- Perhaps the most well adjusted of the crew. An insecure guy desperately trying to win the girl he has pined for since childhood.

Neil- The dim bulb in the group who is only marginally aware of what is going on at all times.

Jay- The raunchiest blowhard you’ve ever seen on TV. Steals most scenes with his tall tales of fictional sexual conquests and inappropriate comments of what he wants to do to Will’s mom.
