New Spell

I was listening to this week’s band, New Spell without realizing it the other day, and thought I had found some Cocteau Twins songs that I hadn’t heard before. Hope-and-lightness infused Cocteau Twins that is. You’re able to get an impression of dreamy darkness with New Spell, but they still leave you with a sense of promise. Having the airy melodies, soaring vocals and ethereal electronics balance so wonderfully is impressive. A good band can accomplish this while maintaining a dark brooding to match the music. Day and night, though when it comes to New Spell, who manage to keep that dour undercurrent, while making the music simultaneously uplifting.
