Introducing you to bands you might not know, but totally should

The Growlers

When I first heard The Growlers’ music I thought I was listening to a band from the 60’s that I hadn’t heard of. With their low-fi recording, background distortions and liberal use of surf guitar, you could mistake them for the Ventures, The Tornados or the Troggs, or some hybrid version of the three. Hailing from only a few towns away from me in Southern CA, the Growlers music blends elements of funk, country and reggae with pure stripped down rock to carry the beautiful lyricism of the band. The most recent of their three albums is the most polished, only slightly eclipsing the preceding two. Naturally now that I want to go out and see them, they are starting a European tour. So it looks like I’ll have to wait. If you’re in NY though, they’ll be playing in Brooklyn for the next few nights. Get out there and check them out. They’ll also be at Bonnaroo this summer where they will undoubtedly find a much larger fanbase. When your friends return (let’s face it, you’re not going) you can say you’ve known them for ages.
