INTRODUCING YOU TO BANDS YOU MIGHT  NOT KNOW, BUT TOTALLY SHOULD.

Modest Mouse

I am always surprised at how many people don’t know the excellent band Modest Mouse. Most don’t realize who they are, despite probably being able to recognize some tunes from 2004’s breakout album “Good News For People Who Love Bad News” or from commercials that have featured their music. They would want to be more widely recognized considering a career that spanned two decades and six mostly great albums. I fell in love with their music when I was introduced to 2,000’s “Building Nothing Out of Something” and was blown away by the variety of influences brought by evolving members of the band. Their lineup had changed for various reasons through the years, with Isaac Brock and Jeremiah Green being the only constants throughout. I was as surprised as you might be when I learned that The Smiths’ Johnny Marr joined the band for a spell in 2006, lending his phenomenal guitar mastery to “We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank”. They unfortunately lost him for “Strangers to Ourselves”, though the album didn’t suffer and is one of my favorites of all their work. You shouldn’t let this fantastic band simply fade into the background when they should be at the forefront of your playlists.

Two weeks in a row I’ll need to give thanks to the stupendous Jaime Lieberman for her exceptional choices when it comes to a 50/50 decision. Next week I’ll throw her off with 4 bands and I’ll be recommending terrible polka.

Just kidding.

No Polka is terrible.
