INTRODUCING YOU TO BANDS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW, BUT TOTALLY SHOULD.
In the past I’ve written about Modest Mouse and Man Man. Members of those two excellent bands comprise two thirds of Mr. Heavenly. The final, also no slouch, comes from the marvelous band Islands. Mixing heavy 60’s rock sounds with upbeat pop, and occasional 50’s doo-wop, they produce an indie sound that can cautiously walk the line between jubilance and darkness. This comes across from song to song and even within songs themselves. Songs like Charlyne have almost danceable pep to it, while the lyrics carry the heft of a love that shouldn’t be, but is unavoidable and despicable. The balance the band brings to their music, and the unique voice of Honus Honus makes Mr. Heavenly one of my favorite bands out there. I hope they are able to take more frequent hiatus’ from their respective main projects to create more together.
