For a long time I would say that I liked all music…. except country. But then I would follow that up with an ever-growing list of country acts that I did like. One day I realized that I actually do like country. It’s just not every variation of it that I enjoy. I can say the same thing for Rock, Classical, Punk, Ska…… I don’t know why I lumped “country” into this one big group of bleh. So when my buddy turned me on to Sturgill Simpson recently I was pretty stoked. I don’t generally have a ton of country exposure, so to know about an artist in this genre who is relatively new is a rarity for me. His music reminds me of some of the best Waylon Jennings or Merle Haggard in their prime. Just pure badassery transformed into beautiful songs. The first song I heard of his was a cover of When In Rome’s synth heavy “The Promise” which took a good song and elevated it to greatness (look up the original, you definitely know it.) From that moment I was hooked. Check him out, even if you think you don’t like country.
