Yesterday, Jason Collins became the first active athlete in one of the four major U.S. sports to open up about about his homosexuality.

There has been an overwhelming amount of support already, including from fellow NBA players Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, and Dwayne Wade.

For some people it will take longer to come around on this topic, but they will.  This was a huge first step.

I grew up in a town where nobody was openly gay.  If you know nobody that is gay, most people, unfortunately, begin to think that it is wrong.

When I went to college, I made a few friends who were gay, and then I started working in the entertainment business, where even more folks are gay.

You get used to it.  You learn to respect it.  Eventually, there is no real difference between gay friends and straight friends.  They’re just friends.

Awareness is first.  Then respect.

Jason Collins has taken a huge step by telling the world a male professional athlete in a masculine sport can be gay.

He’s already being praised for it, which will probably lead to a few more players coming out of the closet, and then we can get back to basketball.

It’s all good, people.
