Happy Father’s Day!  We’ve been featuring great dads for the past 30 days, and now its time for Matt Quinn.  Here is Matt’s bio and interview in his own words…

IMG_0831In 2011, my wife and I welcomed our first son and child, “B” into this world.  Admittedly, I was not a huge fan of kids prior to my wife getting pregnant; however since the introduction to B I must admit that has changed drastically.  He’s an amazing boy, loves to laugh and joke around.  I honestly could never imagine loving something or someone as much as I do B (if my wife is reading this: “You’re a close second babe”).  Around two months before B was to turn 1, and the day before my first Father’s Day, my father had a sudden heart attack and passed away.  Needless to say this past year has been a bit of a roller coaster as I struggle with the loss of my father, all the while trying to figure out how to be a father. This year’s Father’s Day will be bitter sweet, as I will be able to enjoy Father’s Day with my son and family, however will be difficult as it will be anniversary of losing my own.  I know my father instilled the right ingredients in me to be a good man, now the trick will be to finding the right way to pass along all those traits onto my son.

My first memory as a father is…

Seeing my son lying on the weight scale waiting to be cleaned up would be my first memory.  My first memory of actually having to do exercise my finely tuned parenting skills would be when my wife had to go back into the hospital, B and I were on our own for 4 days to fend for ourselves.  I think my wife was rather surprised that we both made it out alive, especially with my limited experience with children and the fact that B was only a couple of days old at the time.

The funniest thing my kids do is…

I will preface this by saying all the things I think my kid does that’s funny are rather on the “immature” side.  He pronounces “truck” with an “F” instead of the “tr”, and he has an obsession with them, so he can get pretty excited when he sees them, of any size.  He also like to put “oh” in front as well, so between his excitement and his pronunciation, simply seeing a truck on the street can lead to a pretty funny incident.

What’s in your man cave?

I don’t have a man cave, however I have been trying to convince my wife to turn our spare bed room into an office (I have yet to succeed).  I have been an avid golfer and collector of things made by Scotty Cameron (he’s a world renowned putter maker); so my man cave would be full of golf stuff and more specifically Scotty Cameron goodies.

How many hours of sleep do you get each night?

Surprisingly I get quite a bit of sleep each night. My wife and I have been lucky to get a sleep in B, which allows us to get a full night sleep – as long as we get to bed early ourselves. J

How many hours of sleep did you get before you became a father?

Funny enough, I probably got less sleep before I was a father (SAY WHAT?!).  It’s true; before B came along I would stay up late drinking and doing useless things like playing C.o.D. on Xbox.  Once B came along, it didn’t take long before I realized that I need my sleep in order to keep up with him.  So with that realization, I now actually drink less (read get drunk less) and head to bed at a more reasonable hour which allows me to get the right sleep to get up “early” and deal with the B Bear.

If you your wife could vacation without your kids, where would you go?

My wife and I got to go to Greece for our Honeymoon.  We often talk about how nice it would be to be able to get back there.

What’s your favorite meal?

My favorite meal would be a BBQ Steak (Ribeye or Boneless Rib) with roasted veggies (asparagus, red pepper, corn, etc) and mashed potatoes with cream corn. Mmmm…

What sports team can your kids never like?

I am not really particular with what teams they “MUST” like, however I will not allow any Toronto Maple Leaf fans to live in my house.  They’re the worst type of fans ever.

Describe your perfect Father’s Day.

My perfect Father’s Day would be playing golf with my dad and my son.  I had always thought about the day all three of us would disappear for an afternoon to swing the sticks.
