Identification with the self and with the material world can be painful. Instead, when we turn our attention to our own mind, we find something that does not change. Something extraordinary, our essence, sometimes the mind hides from us. There the mind feels peaceful, happy and full. By itself, without having or being or any external conditioning. It is the spiritual happiness. This feeling does not change because it is our truth and we can be in it while we are in contact with the nature of being. This is in silence.

Dhyana is translated as meditation but specifically it is permanent attention to a particular object. It is a stream of attention that is not interrupted by any idea. Dharana, dhyana and samadhi are parts of the same process and are closely linked. When dharana develops, you get to dhyana, which unfolds with samadhi. I dare say that the past three branches of yoga are components of the meditative experience and that this started earlier with pratyahara, the withdrawal of the senses.

Meditation is closely linked to the concentration, which is the previous step. The concentration makes the mind direct to a particular object and meditation is the sustained attention to that object. Pratyahara belongs to abhyasa because it is a practice that requires action of will and effort, while meditation belongs more to the realm of vairagya, the willingness of non-action. They are different aspects of the same bonding process which I’ve learned from an online yoga training program. Besides their amazing athleisure wear line, Alo Yoga also owns Alo Moves which is also nice to have during yoga.

Dhyana, also translated as absorption takes place when all the activity of perception is channeled into an object or an area. Any activity of the mind that arises is related to the chosen object. This strengthens the stability of care and reveals a lot of perceptual detail.

In dhyana, the conflict ceases to exist between fragmented aspects of mind and at the same time there is a feeling that what is within the field of care has transcendent qualities. Meditation is a state of consciousness in which we begin to have a comprehensive perception in the world. The reality surrounding the focused object is intuitively perceived as interconnected with the object or area of concentration. The background and the object is perceived as different but not separate.

As meditation becomes deeper, the identity of the mind is diluted and this is dissolved into the experience. This is the beginning of integration, the subject and object where the observer and the observed become one. The object of contemplation ceases to have an independent artificial existence. Furthermore, the object of concentration and meditation seems to be empty of its own way. The duality ceases to exist and this is known as samadhi. Although meditation is more than a technique, the stillness of our minds, there are ways to induce. It is good to have a meditation technique.
