I have it pretty good in terms of my parents and Clarissa’s parents. If you were to take parts of each of them you could make the perfect human being. At the same time you could also create a living nightmare if you were to take the wrong parts. That’s just the way that it is for all of us. We all have wonderful glorious parts of our ourselves that should be shared as well as awful hideous things that we shouldn’t share with anyone…but do anyway.

Happy Birthday Reece!!

Happy Birthday Reece!!

When raising a child, it is best to see what your parents did right and imitate those things. But you must also see what they did not do right and try try try to avoid doing those things.

One thing my parents absolutely did right was they made me feel like the most special person on the planet on my birthday. And not just when I was growing up but well into my adult life. Even my most recent birthday-number 35-they made me feel like the day belonged to me and no one else.

I remember when I was 23 and living in Florida I got a call at eight in the morning. My dad was on one phone and my mom on the other. They belted out the “Happy Birthday” song in perfect harmony. Here I am a 23-year old “adult” a thousand miles from home crying like a baby. That’s a successful birthday phone call.

June 11th is one of the most special days of the year. It’s Reece’s birthday. Reece, my stepson, changed my life faster and more so than any other person I have ever met. The day I met Reece, December 26th 2005, I knew I would never live another day without him being a part of my life. He is a special little boy and deserves a birthday fit for a Prince.

Here are 5 ideas as to how to make a birthday boy feel super special.

  1. The Official Birthday Breakfast! Not just that, but also the Official Birthday Drive to School!. The Official Birthday Outfit, lunch, dinner, snack, hug, kiss. Everything you can think of should be the Official Birthday whatever. Just see what that does to a little boy.
  2. The Official Birthday Lunch! (OK, I’ll stop). I have the incredible opportunity to go have lunch with Reece today at school. I’m bringing Chik-Fil-A (8 piece nugget, waffle fries and a strawberry shake). What an opportunity to make him feel special and go spend some time with him and a few of his classmates.
  3. Just be nice. Forget about those petty things just for one day. Lay off of him if he doesn’t bring his sneakers upstairs or if he leaves his baseball bat and glove in the middle of the living room. Just for one day, let it go.
  4. Make sure everyone around him knows it’s his birthday. People love to wish other people happy birthday (just check out Facebook) especially children. Give them the opportunity to wish a child happy birthday and watch him glow in the attention.
  5. Tell him you love him and let him know how special he is. This is his day. Granted, a child who has baseball games 3 times a week and piano once a week and a zillion other things going on get’s a lot of attention. And although you are there for most if not all of those things he may not realize you are there because you care about him. Take this day to show him how much he means to you. Go above and beyond.

Birthdays are an incredible day to show someone how special they are. Don’t let the opportunity pass you by. No matter the age, 1-100, make their day about them. That’s one character trait that all children should pick up on and pass down from generation to generation.

How have people made your birthday special in the past?
