Did you know that sometimes a father’s life is similar to a pair of socks in a washing machine? A dad may put everything in but he may not always seem to get the same back.
Now this may seem highly controversial and to be compared to a pair of socks is shocking too (for most dads anyway). But stay with us for a minute and let’s take a closer look.
Obviously, it’s not about being hot and smelly or something like that; it just from time to time a dad can have moments where you feel like something is missing in this fatherhood mission thing.
Thinking back to the socks again; as the only man in my family home I have been amazed at the number of times that my laundry has come back and one foot of several pairs of my socks were missing. My wife, daughters and little Nate don’t wear them, so where is it that they go to?
I have wondered whether washing machines eat men’s socks. Our Whirlpool washer was stuck on sensing issues. But, I decided that was too ridiculous to believe. However, quite recently something happened that could be a major turning point in the theory of missing socks.
I found one of my socks stuck in the trouser leg of my jeans.
Could this be the answer to the missing sock dilemma? The sock and trouser conspiracy…
Well I don’t know for sure, but this little episode reminded me that the life of a dad can often seem like giving, giving and more giving. Some days it may seem like no one understands you in your own home. Have you ever been there?
The kids may ignore you, your wife or partner may get annoyed with you and on a really bad day the dog chews your favourite running shoes! Laugh if you may, but this really happens.
One thing for sure- you’re not alone and even better that’s just the way nature planned it. What I’m leading to is that being a dad isn’t always easy, but by heck it sure is worth it.
And the best part is just like my sock that turned up out of the blue… from time to time, your children will do something that makes you realise that all the giving was a great investment. They will develop new habits, learn new skills and mature right in front of your very eyes that you may even have to pinch yourself and say “wow!”
So even, though some days we may seem to be given the ‘socks in the washing machine treatment’, just remember to keep pouring in the love!
The best is yet to come.
