Synopsis:
With a rag-tag crew at his side, and seemingly blind to the impossible odds stacked against him, the Captain has one dream: to beat his bitter rivals Black Bellamy and Cutlass Liz to the much coveted Pirate of the Year Award. It’s a quest that takes our heroes from the shores of exotic Blood Island to the foggy streets of Victorian London. Along the way they battle a diabolical queen and team up with a haplessly smitten young scientist but never lose sight of what a pirate loves best: adventure!
The Pirates! Band of Misfits – Trailer
Review:
I took my 2.5 year old son to see this movie, while mommy was sick. He has only seen 3 other movies in the theater and he couldn’t sit through any of them for the entire movie. This was an adventure of our own, since I don’t usually venture too far without mom for back-up!
After getting our popcorn and drinks, we sat down for the movie. As nervous as I was, I was also a little excited to be having some “boy time”, seeing a movie about pirates.
I thought that the stop-motion clay animation was really well done and it adds a sense of realism that isn’t there in traditional animated movies. This was the first movie “clay-mation” movie to be released in 3D; however, we chose to see the 2D version since I knew my son wouldn’t wear the glasses. But if your kid(s) will wear the glasses, there was a lot of stuff that would have been cool in 3D!
I expected it to be funnier, but definitely wasn’t boring. Some of the humor was more “adult”, kind of along the lines of the Shrek movies. Basically, the Pirate Captain is trying to win the “Pirate of the Year” award and has to decide between giving up his beloved “Polly”, which happens to be a do-do bird rather than a parrot, or losing out on the prize. His decision leads to some laughs and a really big adventure. The Pirate Captain is kind of a “loser” type and the brunt of other pirates’ jokes, like Jack Sparrow. Despite his faults, he is lovable and there is a good moral to the story, “stay true to yourself and trust your friends”.
Bottom Line:
As I said above, my son hadn’t made it all the way through a movie before and I was by myself with him, but it went really well. He wanted to get out of his seat once, but never took his eyes off of the screen. He laughed when funny things happened and clapped when it was over. He watched and seemed to enjoy the entire movie. I would say that it was a success and the movie has his approval, which means it has my approval.
I think that boys and girls, ages 3-10, will probably like it a lot. Pre-teens and teenagers will be hit or miss. It was a great daddy movie and is worth checking out!
I give it 4 out of 5 Taps!
