Summertime adventures by definition are adventurous. It is the off-road portion of life. It’s the time of year where things aren’t contained into perfectly manicured segments of time introduced and ushered by a chorus of bells and lines that construct a school day. Summertime is free time.

Summertime, it’s the perfect opportunity to break free from routine and live a little more freely. While it doesn’t mean that there isn’t any structure or objectives, it does mean you can explore some great options. It’s the time to pave your own way and experience your own thrilling adventure.

This past summer, we had some fantastic experiences and great options available to us. For example, we decided to bike to a nearby park, relished in the refreshing splash park, trekked through the woods, played on the forest playground sets, and biked back home.

The kids loved this. I enjoyed taking them and watching them bask in the joy of a beautiful day. The water was a cool relief from the hot day. The hike was a fun way to burn off energy. The bike ride was relaxing and a fun way to exhibit our independence from schedules, time, and buildings. We got to just be.

Now one of the challenges for adults during outings like this is choosing the right footwear. Flip flops are a summertime favorite, but they usually don’t offer much support for things like hiking. Shoes offer the support, but are a pain to put on and off during the course of trips through a splash park and walks through nature.

I chose to wear a pair of Kamik sandals for this trip (and many others) because they gave me a crossover performance. I had the support and safety of a shoe to bike and hike, but I also had the freedom to walk through water without ruining my shoes or feeling like I was walking through a marsh for the entire afternoon.

What’s cool about these sandals is that they are functional and comfortable for a number of different activities – making them a versatile option for me to use in the summer and fall for sure. I’ve also worn them to walk the dog or just around the yard.

Now that school is back in session, and the bells are ringing again, and the schedules are demanding again- the challenge now is to find a way to feel that summertime adventure again. It may be relegated to the weekends, but there have to be times to take those hikes, ride the bike, or simply find a place to just be.

Somehow, this school year, I’m going to find a way to keep that summer spirit alive. In addition, I hope to find a new way of stepping into adventures – perhaps even when it snows? Adventures don’t need to be confined to the summer, and no matter what the season, Kamik shoes and boots can cover every step.
